This is a general English course with the main emphasis being on literacy and reading on topics of interest to parents of school age children.

Course aim

The course is to improve your general level of English however the topics will be of particular relevance to parents of school aged children.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is open to all levels of students and work is graded accordingly however historically the general level of the class is quite high and total beginners would find it hard

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and understand at least three different parts of speech, i.e. noun, verb, adjective etc
  • Read and extract the main points of articles about how children learn
  • Understand and use at least four question words correctly I.e. What, who, where, when
  • Describe actions/scenes/people in the moment by using the correct form of the verb plus ‘ing’
  • Use appropriate spelling by learning spelling rules i.e. for "ing" verbs

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The tutor will use methods such as whole group discussion, speaking in pairs, individual reading and writing.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
