2 hour hand drumming and percussion playing /free style/ including using the voice as an instrument. Also encourage participants/learners to bring along any kind of hand drum or percussion instrument to join in with the session that makes a sound or can be adapted to create a percussion sound and have a go at making a simple shake percussion instrument out of re-cycled materials

Course aim

To create percussion sounds from hand drums and percussion and hand held instruments. Encouraging the students to have a go at creating their own sounds

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To explore their own development and learning to have fun and be able to express themselves through sound and percussion and make up their own beats and rhythms
  • Be able to engage with other students in a positive way, while in the session
  • Gain confidence in themselves by learning how to make sound and join in with other students
  • make friends with like minded people who have the same interest in drumming and percussion
  • learn basic skills of working together as a class/team to achieve and all round sound and help each other in the sessions with the instruments, to make some good sounds , helping each other to stay in time.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • All students are LDD and will be assessed by their engagement level and a short course evaluation done by the tutor to assess the continue learning process of each student over the 10 sessions

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Feedback will be evaluated by student response and if they are happy and can engage with carers helping them, adjustments will be made where necessary plus a course evaluation through out for each student ,done by the tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • All resources will be provided but if the students want to bring and share any hand held/drum instruments, they are free to do so

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • The are all LDD students will be engaged in other / workshop /activities at the WEA and in other out reach sessions in day services and they will continue to do both during and following the sessions. Accompanied by their key workers and support teams
