This is a beginners introduction to Family History and will cover the basics of Civil Registration (Birth, Marriage and Death Records). Learn how to access the records and order copies of certificates. Census Records will also be discussed together with the 1939 Register. We will also cover Parish Registers; Poor Law; Apprenticeships; Wills; Migration and Military records.

Course aim

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn how to access the records and order copies of certificates.
  • Census Records will also be discussed together with the 1939 Register.
  • We will also cover Parish Registers; Poor Law; Apprenticeships; Wills; Migration and Military records.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • The workshop includes a free Family History Programme to use on your computer and we will briefly discuss genealogy websites, both free and subscription based and message boards.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
