Learn more techniques and improve your painting in friendly surroundings in central Rye. Stimulating themes and suggestions for subject matter. Advice is given about materials and there is a strong focus on knowing the qualities of individual colours leading to fresher colour mixes and washes.

Course aim

This course will suit anyone who wants to learn or improve watercolour painting. This is also a very friendly class in an excellent venue. Traditional methods of painting and drawing are taught.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The desire to develop your painting an a friendly atmosphere is all you need.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Confident colour mixing
  • Better understanding of Tonal Values.
  • Improve composition
  • Gain confidence through involvement with others and by creating better work.
  • Broaden undrstanding of other artists and styles of art.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • There will be some demonstrations of techniques, however each student is welcome to follow their own preferred preferences and aims.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You need watercolour paper A3 brushes- round size 6 and 8 A modest set of good quality watercolours- Cotman, Aquafine, Rembrandt or other. Try on line shopping with' Ebay' or ' Ken Bromley's' excellent service.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Visit exhibitions- ask your self which style you would most like to achieve.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Join and Art Society, on-line art groups, exhibit locally.
