We shall discuss literature of the 1990s that explores what it means to be alive in this complicated world of ours. Novels by Mantel, Ondaatje, Adam Thorpe, Andrei Makine, stories by Alice Munro, a play by Michael Frayn and poems of the 1990s.’

This course is run in co-operation with University of Oxford Department for Continuing Education (OUDCE). Students enrolled on OUDCE are expected to undertake some course work. Please Phone the OUDCE Student Advisor on 01865280900 to book. Fee: £10 addition for CATS points.

Course aim

We shall discuss literature of the 1990s that explores what it means to be alive in this complicated world of ours. Novels by Mantel, Ondaatje, Adam Thorpe, Andrei Makine, stories by Alice Munro, a play by Michael Frayn and poems of the 1990s.’

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a range of literature from the 1990s
  • Demonstrate the key themes of the literature studied
  • Discuss the similarities and differences of the authors' styles

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It would be useful to look at the books and poems prior to the course start

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
