Masterpieces of Romanesque Art Economic prosperity, growing population, relative political stability and expansion of monasticism are behind the huge artistic activity which took place in 11th and 12th century Europe. The course will examine a range of works: Catalan frescoes and Spanish ivories; the Bayeux tapestry and the monumental sculpture of Autumn Cathedral; English reliquaries and the Wincheste; the Stavelot Triptych and German stained glass.

Course aim

To introduce the students to key works of art and architecture created in 11th and 12th century Europe with a view to understanding their main features and functions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • list two main features of the art and architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries
  • discuss some artworks in a critical manner
  • list two reasons for the flowering of the arts during the period

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
