Day School: Needle Felt – Christmas Decorations

Make lovely sculptured wool Christmas Decorations using wet and needle felting techniques. You will learn the process of wet felting using a resist and mould to form a cone Christmas tree and then progress onto needle felting baubles to hang on a natural or artificial Christmas tree. Samples of the decorations will be available to help you make your choices. Throughout the day there will be step by step instructions and demonstrations of both wet felting and needle felting techniques, including tips to avoid pricking yourself and not break the needle. You will use different wools and a selection of tools and equipment to create your 2D and 3D decorations. This includes methods of how to form shapes, using tools, including usable everyday items found in the home. By the end of the day, you will have completed several decorations to give as a gift or display proudly in your home.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to wet and needle felting techniques with a view to being able to create your own Christmas decorative wool sculptures. You will wet felt a cone Christmas Tree and needle felt a selection of different wool baubles.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Needle felt both 2D and 3D shapes using different gauge felting needles depending on the stage of the needle felting process i.e initial sculpturing of the bauble, overlaying coloured wools changing the needle to add detail and achieve a smooth finish
  • Use different wool types for sculpting and for adding detail, the reasons for this and understand that different sheep breeds' wool respond to the needle felting process differently.
  • Make a simple resist to use to create the cone Christmas tree, learn wet felting techniques and how to use a mould to form the cone Christmas tree.
  • Use templates to use as guides when creating your bauble decorations.
  • Understand the benefits of using what is thought to be the most sustainable fibre available as a craft material and the friendly impact it has on the environment.

How will I be taught?

  • You will complete your project in the classroom and have the skills and confidence to be able to continue working at home and attend other classes

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to review your progress throughout the session. There will be samples of how the decorations look at different stages of being made to check against your own work

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Please bring £18 to purchase your needlefelt kit which includes tools and instructions and wool for the Christmas tree. You may purchase further materials and wet felting tools to enable you to continue felting. a towel and apron for wet felting. There are cafes for lunch or bring your own.
