Day School: Paris and the Art of the Metro

Ref: C3744622

The buildings and platform walls of more than 80 of the Metro stations of Paris provide travellers with a sumptuous feast of French art and design. Images are depicted in murals, mosaics and panels, spreading in many cases across the whole interior surface of the station - along the length of the platform walls and right over the tracks. These images depict much of the exotic & traumatic history of Paris, illustrating major events and illustrious heroes as well as times of suffering and shame. Many of the station buildings can themselves be considered as works of art, from the fluid designs of the original Art Nouveau entrances to the hi-tech architecture of today. The course will start with an overview of the city to set the Metro art in context, outlining the history, architecture and art of this spectacular "City of Light" and wonderful "City of Love".
