Glories of Venetian Art

We shall examine Venetian art and architecture from its Byzantine origins in Torcello churches, through Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces by Bellini, Titian Longhena and Tiepolo, to the innovative works of Scarpa and Gianquinto. Each work will be considered in terms of style, technique, content and function and related to the unique context in which it was created.

Course aim

To introduce the students to Venetian paintings, sculpture and architecture through in depth study of selected artworks created from the 6th to the 20th century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss some artworks in a visually critical way.
  • List two distinctive features of Venetian buildings in the 15th and 16th century.
  • List two main features of the paintings of either Bellini or Tiepolo.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
