Hieroglyphics for Absolute Beginners

Ref: C3744592

Since the decipherment of Hieroglyphs in 1822 the discipline of Egyptology has been transformed. We can read papyri, stela, tomb and temple walls and build a real understanding of Pharaonic Egypt. With a focus on those new to Hieroglyphs, this course will introduce Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs at a beginner level, discussing first concepts and presenting common signs, and supporting the reading of key pieces of information from ancient sources including the names of kings and gods. Some elementary Middle Egyptian grammar will be introduced and we will move on to reading some elementary texts such as the funerary offering formula.

Course aim

To introduce the concepts and characters of the ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic script and to support the student in reading some basic texts

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course will start at the very beginning assuming no prior knowledge.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify selected pharaohs' names within a cartouche
  • Identify the names of common gods and goddesses
  • Transliterate selected words written in uniliteral and common multi-literal Hieroglyphs
  • Read, transliterate and translate common offering formulae in Middle Egyptian
  • Transliterate unfamiliar characters with the aid of a sign list.

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The course will be a combination of presented material and individual exercises (which can if desired be carried out in pairs) with tutor support. It will help to work through exercises at home but this is not essential.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal, no tests or exams, exercises will be self-marked.

What else do I need to know?

  • Paper, a pen and/or pencil is essential. A copy of either edition of Collier and Manley 'How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs' published by British Museum Press will be very helpful.
