Daily Life and Society in Ancient Egypt

Ref: C3744563

Thanks to the decipherment of Hieroglyphs and the at times remarkable preservation of texts and artefacts from ancient Egypt we are able to gain fascinating glimpses into this culture which endured for three millennia. This course will review a range of sources such as tomb scenes, objects, texts and ostraca all of which will help us piece by piece reveal what life and society was like in Pharaonic Egypt. We will review topics such as birth and death, life and relationships, work and occupations, play and education, illness and medicine, housing, courts and punishments, wealth and poverty, and religion in ancient Egypt with particular emphasis on individuals and personal piety.
