Art of the Ancient World (OUDCE Study Day)

This day school explores ancient art to build an understanding of the classical world. Whether your interest in Greece and Rome is long-standing or new, this study day will give you a fresh perspective, develop your skills in analysis and evaluation and lay a firm foundation for further exploration of the art, architecture and artefacts of the ancient world.

Course aim

To introduce students to the many different forms taken by art in the ancient world including Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Etruscan works

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the chronological time line of artistic development in the classical period
  • Recognise a range of styles and movements in art that occur in this period
  • Identify the social and historical events that produced the works of art
  • Recognise the extant work of key artists in this period

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
