This day will examine how important Lancelot “Capability” Brown was as a landscape designer and how he managed to create so many parks across England. It will also set him in the context of mid 18th Century gardeners and owners. 9.45-10.45. “Who was Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.” 10.45-11.00. Coffee. 11.00-12.00. “What was Brown’s style of Landscape?” 12.00-13.00. Lunch. 13.00-14.45. Group study : “‘Capability’ Brown in Documents.” Learners will be provided with a range of 18th & 19th Century archive documents relating to Brown. 14.45-15.00 Tea. 15.00-15.45. Conclusions and ideas for further study.

Course aim

This course aims to give an introduction to the life and work of Lancelot Brown and set him in the context of 18th century landscape design.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the main events of Brown’s life.
  • Recognise the main features of Brown’s landscape style.
  • Analyse the statements of status Brown’s Landscapes made.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
