Poems and Short Stories

Ref: C3744552

We will discuss poems that explore tensions between different moods, attitudes and values, including contrasts between love and loneliness; power and compassion; and melancholy and joy. We will also discuss the art of the dramatic monologue, and poems about the spirit of place. The course will include works by Wordsworth, Shelley, Tennyson, Emily Bronte, Browning, Charlotte Mew, Sylvia Plath, Philip Larkin and Elizabeth Jennings. We will also consider a selection of short stories. As well as discussing the themes and values of the chosen works, we will also look at the importance of tone, rhythm, rhyme, imagery, and symbolism in poetry; and explore different kinds of characterisation, and the use of dialogue and descriptive writing in the short stories
