London's Smaller Art Galleries

London's smaller art galleries offer a wealth of treasures to be discovered, such as the Courtauld Gallery’s Impressionist masterpieces; Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Old Masters' paintings; the Estorick’s collection of Italian modern art; the Guildhall Art Gallery’s Pre-Raphaelite works. Works will be studied in terms of style, content, provenance and reasons for their acquisition. The architecture of each gallery will also be considered.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the origins, development and present day collections of seven of London's smaller art galleries

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • examine some of the artworks explored during the course in a critical manner
  • describe the aims of two of the galleries discussed during the course
  • explain the main architectural features of either the Guildhall Art Gallery or the Dulwich Picture Gallery

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • plan to visit one or more of the galleries discussed during the course
