In this introductory session you will be introduced to the ways in which codes are created and used, and how they can be deciphered and broken. You will also be introduced to some ways in which ordinary language, or invented languages, can be used for secret communication.

Course aim

To introduce you to the basic methods of creating and deciphering codes, and the use of languages, natural or invented, for secret communication.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discover how codes and ciphers are created and used.
  • Identify the methods and principles used in deciphering them.
  • Recognise how ordinary language can be used for secret communication, and languages modified or invented for the same purpose.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be given a simple example of code to decipher in class, and there may be other similar short exercises if time allows.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need some paper or something to do the exercise on, but nothing else is needed.
