Sketching and drawing with others ,outside in a lovely setting. Focus on Landscapes. Learn how to organize yourself to work outside. Select interesting views and use a variety of pens and crayons to make marks with . Keep a sketch book as a journal of your experiences. Working with others,meeting new friends and having fun. The venues will be largely in Hastings old Town with some suggestions from the class.

Course aim

This course is to provide a small group of sketchers with interesting venues with fascinating subject matter to work from. Ideally - all outside at a range of ' settings' eg Starting at the Hastings, Old Town beach.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Selecting a good subject- drawing boats for example.
  • Using a variety of sketching equipment and being able to organize a set of useful materials for going outside.
  • Exchange ideas with others and to give feedback on each others work explaining your ideas and intentions.
  • Better understanding of Perspective in drawing the landscape.
  • Greater self- confidence in ones own abilities.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Mostly you will carry out observational drawing/ painting and be prompted by the tutor on methods and techniques.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • By using a sketch book you will create a small portfolio of your sketches which will make an interesting record on which to look back.

What else do I need to know?

  • Hard backed sketch book, folding chair, pencils and pens. eg. biros, felt tips, drawing pens. Small set of watercolours.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Be prepared for all weathers- it could be showery. We will probably go to a café so have coffee money. Share transport with a friend- its good for he environment- and economical.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • You might enjoy the course and want to join the Autumn courses- Rye or Little Common with Judy Sillem. They are basic watercolour painting for all.
