An intermediate course in DSLR photography helping the student get the best out of their DSLR camera for a creative project that they will explore in depth. Students will explore the functions of their camera, how to shoot using a variety of advanced settings and how to capture high-quality images of their chosen subject matter. Throughout the course, we will explore the student's creative choices and implement a number of creative techniques to come up with original and exciting projects. They will then complete a series of shoots based on the project pushing their creative choices and allowing them to grow in confidence in using the DSLR. The learner will learn to use their camera as a tool for creative expression.

Course aim

This course will let the student look in detail at finding creative projects and how best to use their DSLR to achieve their project goals.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • confident in the use of my DSLR advanced settings.
  • confident in using a variety of techniques to create original projects.
  • be confident in the presentation of my project.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • The student will need to bring their own DSLR camera.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • An understanding of DSLR's basic functions will help.
