Coiled Baskets

On this course you will learn coiled basketry techniques to make small containers or mats. Soft materials like rushes, grasses and leaves will be used. Some materials will be provided and you will also have a chance to experiment with materials you collect from your garden or from the countryside.

Course aim

Learn to make coiled baskets and mats using grasses, rushes, and other soft materials

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make cordage with natural plant materials
  • Know how to prepare materials for use
  • Use different techniques to sew or knot, and coil the materials into a basket

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You can collect materials in your own time to use in the class. This will be explained in the first class

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • The cost for materials provided is added onto your course fee and collected when you enrol

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
