Seminar: Byzantine Ravenna

Ref: C3744436

In the turmoil of the Western Roman Empire, Ravenna came to reign supreme. In the 5th and 6th centuries Rome had been savagely sacked and was in turmoil, Constantinople was under Ottoman pressures. Ravenna took centre stage. We look at the city's rise from a period of neglect to a period governed first by Goths from the north of Europe then by Byzantine Christians. In both these periods great buildings were erected, adorned by splendid "Imperial" mosaics. We will see at the end of the 6th century that Ravenna was the hub of a turning point. The Byzantine Empire was set on sure foundations; art and architecture wholly new. It's magnificent art rightly dubbed the city as "Capital of Mosaic".
