Seminar: Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark

At the age of fifteen, George III's sister, Caroline Matilda, was married off to King Christian VII of Denmark. She was deeply distressed, but the marriage was regarded as a diplomatic necessity. Increasingly unhappy as a queen, she took a lover and mounted a coup against her husband. For The result was a predictable disaster that nearly led to a war between Britain and Denmark.

Course aim

The course will provide an overview of the short and turbulent life of George III's sister, Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark and show her importance in the history of Denmark.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand the main events in the life of Caroline Matilda
  • assess the importance of Caroline Matilda's coup against her husband in the history of Denmark
  • recognise the potential problems of diplomatic marriages in the period

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
