This course aims to embrace the most popular music styles between 1930 and 1960, influential pieces of music and the artists and performers behind these pieces. You will explore the many forms of popular music styles including, blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll and many more. Through the use of various musical and video examples, you will be able to relive some of the iconic tracks and performances from popular music history. This course is for all music lovers and you are encouraged to bring your own musical favourites from this time period to show and discuss!

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to popular musical styles between 1930 and 1960. Exploring influential pieces of music, artists and musicians throughout these periods.

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Offer a brief insight into the popular musical styles during the 1930s and 1960s
  • Discuss influential pieces of music in these genres
  • Name three popular artists, musicians and performers

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • A pen/pencil and paper
