Day School: Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age

Ref: C3744387

Johannes Vermeer (1632-75) spent his whole life in Delft. He is famous for enigmatic domestic scenes with refined brushwork, using dots of paint to create the illusion of reflected light. Many of the 34 surviving works feature musical instruments and we shall explore possible explanations for this and the use of other objects as symbols. As well as Vermeer, there will be examples of the works of his equally talented contemporaries in what became known as the Golden Age of Netherlandish art.
