Following our 2018 course 'Economics in the News', we will consider four currently 'hot issues. These include the prospects for the British, EU and American economies, the control of international corporate giants, what to do about economic inequality and whether some public services in the UK would be improved by renationalization.

Course aim

To examine 4 big questions in economics today including the control of multinationals and renationalization of public services.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is designed to follow on from previous economics courses run by the Reading WEA Branch, but anyone with some grasp of economic theory and a lively interest in discussing policy will be welcome

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe how economists approach specific issues of public policy
  • Apply elementary macro- and micro-economics to issues under discussion
  • Analyse in a critical fashion a range of economic approaches to questions of corporatism, nationalization, inequalities and economic development

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Members of the course are expected to keep up to date with intelligent comment on current economic matters by regularly reading a serious newspaper, and/or preferably The Economist weekly
