Post-War British Film and Society

Ref: C3744338

This course will look at film and society in postwar Britain, from the 1940s through to the early 1960s. We will explore how people’s hopes for a reconstructed Britain were represented on film and also how society was changing in the aftermath of the war. We will examine the conflicts based on gender, age and class, how some groups wanted a return to the old society and those who sought change to what went before. We will also look at how and why films during this period became bolder in exploring issues of sexuality, youth culture, race and ethnicity.
