Discovering Ancient Rome

This short course will investigate some of the great monuments of ancient Rome and the Roman world. Although hugely influenced by the Greeks, the Romans innovated in architecture, public and domestic decoration, all made to celebrate the power of the emperor and the glory of the gods. Major structures to be explored include the Colosseum and Circus Maximus, the great villas of the Roman world and the magnificent remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum where mosaic, painting and sculpture have survived in near perfect condition.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce students to some of the great art works of ancient Rome. We will concentrate not only on craft and style, but on the context in which these art works were made and used in the classical period.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least one amphitheatre and one theatre from the Roman world.
  • Describe the circumstances that led to the preservation of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
  • Discuss the uses to which Roman painting and mosaics were put by Roman people.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
