Masterpieces of Netherlandish Art

Van Eyck's and Bouts' altarpieces and portraits; Memling's works for the Hospital of Saint John and for wealthy merchants in Bruges; Bosch's visions of heaven and hell will be explored in terms of meaning and purpose, style and technique. The emphasis will be on paintings but reference will be made to both sculpture and architecture when relevant.

Course aim

To introduce the students to the innovative art of 15th century Flanders with a view to understanding style and technique, function and content of works by celebrated artists such as Van Eyck and Memling.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • examine the style and content of some artworks in a critical way
  • list two features of Netherlandish painting
  • explain two ways in which Netherlandish art was influenced by its patrons

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
