Day School:Influential Philosophers from Aristotle to the Modern Era

This interactive, enjoyable and stimulating Philosophy study day would suit those who have attended the previous Influential Philosophers study day, as well as newcomers. We will consider another variety of key philosophers throughout the ages, exploring and evaluating their influential theories. A range of branches of philosophy will be included and fundamental philosophical concepts and terms introduced.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to a variety of key philosophers, discussing and assessing their influential theories.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No prior knowledge is required, but a good grasp of English is essential

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain three theories of different philosophers.
  • Identify the main criticisms of these theories.
  • Think critically about issues arising from the content of the study day.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • It might be helpful to bring paper and a pen with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • The tutor will recommend reading during the study day
