This is a panoramic survey of the beauties of French culture from its earliest beginnings up to the present day. Although discussing architecture, art, history, and literature, special emphasis will be placed on French music. The course is beautifully illustrated with CDs and DVDs.

Course aim

To provide a panorama of French history and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day, including art, architecture, history, literature and music. Illustrated with CDs and DVDs.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of France and its history and culture
  • Have a better understanding of French architecture and art
  • Have a better understanding of French history
  • Have a better understanding of French literature
  • Have a better understanding of French music

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The learning process will be carefully monitored through use of class discussion and self-marked tests.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be opportunities each week for class discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students will be encouraged to look up specific subjects on the internet and also to make sure they are registered with their local public library.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Extensive reading lists will be provided at the start of each course
