Eight Things to See...

Why are some art works so much more famous than others? This course will investigate eight major monuments of art history from the great museums and cities of the world. A varied selection of painting, sculpture and architecture will be included, with examples to be found in the great galleries including the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris and the Prado in Madrid. Artists will include Bernini, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Botticelli, Holbein and Vermeer. Buildings will also feature with an investigation of the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Borromini.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce students to a variety of famous art works with a view to better understanding their inherent qualities, but also the reasons for their fame.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the work Las Meninas by Velazquez.
  • Describe at least one of Rembrandt's self portraits.
  • Discuss the reasons that art works gain fame and notoriety over time.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
