Day School: Istanbul-A cultural tour

Istanbul's rich history and its unique position between Europe and Asia are reflected in its art and architecture. The study day will examine in detail the most important artistic treasures of the city: the Roman Hippodrome and Byzantine Hagia Sophia, the Ottoman Topkapi Palace and Sinan's Suleymaniye Mosque. Each work will be considered within the cultural context in which it was created.

Course aim

The course will provide an introduction to the most important artworks created in Byzantine Costantinople and Ottoman Istanbul with a view to understanding their distinctive features and their original function.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Examine some artworks discussed during the study day in a critical manner.
  • Explain two functions of the Topkapi Palace.
  • List three features of either the Suleymaniye Mosque or Hagia Sophia

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • undertake independent research on some of the artworks examined during the study day
