A Sketch is primarily a drawing can be made in any drawing medium. The term is most often applied to graphic work executed in a dry medium such as silverpoint, graphite, pencil, charcoal or pastel. It may also apply to drawings executed in pen and ink, digital input such as a digital pen, ballpoint pen, marker pen, water colour and oil paint. The latter two are generally referred to as "water colour sketches" and "oil sketches" A sketch may serve a number of purposes: it might record something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use or it might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principle. We will be exploring every aspect of drawing, techniques and materials..

Course aim

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is suitable for both the accomplished artist and the beginner. I will be demonstrating different techniques and encourage the individual student to experiment.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • I will expect the student to understand the basic techniques of drawing,
  • The student will have mastered basic techniques and use of drawing materials.
  • The use of a sketch book.
  • To have acquired a basic knowledge of the history drawing and sketching in Art.
  • The completion of as many as possible sketches and drawings in their sketch books!

How will I be taught?

  • I am always delighted when students continue work at home, it isn’t always possible ( other commitments ). I understand but creativity is immensely valuable. Art is an all consuming process once started hard to stop.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There is WiFi at Parkside and an IT room that is available for students use.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • I have a supply of art materials, students are able to experiment with, before buying their own. For this course a Sketch Book of A4 size is required.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • There is WiFi at Parkside and an IT room is available for the students use.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
