Looking at Modern Art

What makes art modern? Through an investigation of the changes in art from the latter part of the 19th century we will track the development of modern art. This will include an exploration of changes in Paris amongst the artists we now call Impressionists, with their growing interest in painting modern life in a modern way. A study of the great isms of modern art - Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Futurism and Surrealism will form the major part of this course and will include discussion of the works of great masters such as Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, Dali and Mondrian.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce students to the developments in art beginning at the end of the 19th century. We will attempt to define modernism and track its development through paintings and sculpture made by experimental artists in this period.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify one major work by Eduoard Manet
  • Describe one major work by Pablo Picasso
  • Begin to discuss the development of modern painting through a study of Impressionism

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • A good book to look at before the course would be What Are You Looking At? By Will Gompertz.
