Course aim

The course is to help develop creative writing ability, the emphasis being on individual development. All forms of writing are included - short stories, poetry, novels, plays, memoirs and feature articles. It is for all stages. Beginners are welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Interest in developing creative writing is the only requirement

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Show development of my writing skills
  • Show development in assessing my own work
  • Have experimented in writing in different forms
  • Be aware of publication guidelines, should these be relevant

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Readng of students' work and constructive feedback forms a crucial element

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen or pencil and writing paper, together, preferably, with work in progress

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Reading widely is valuable for creative writing. If pubication is in mind, 'The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook'
