Vive la France: A Celebration of French Culture

This course is intended to provide a panoramic view of the development of French history and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day. During the course, attention will be paid to France's great accomplishments in architecture, art, literature and music, the whole course being illustrated with DVDs and CDs. The course will also include readings from French literature in English translation.

Course aim

France has a long and glorious history, outstanding being her architectural, pictorial, literary and musical achievements. Illustrated with CDs and DVDs..

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the development of French culture
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of French art and architecture
  • Outline the key developments in French literature
  • Outline the key developments in French music
  • Explain some of the differences between French culture and that of other countries such as England

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be provided with a reading list to enable them to prepare for the next lecture. Extensive notes are also provided at each session outlining the essential points made in each lecture.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Class discussion has always proved to be an excellent means of ensuring that learning is taking place. Students will always have an opportunity to discuss their progress during the course with the tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • While pre-reading is not a necessity, students will be encouraged to look at specific works, a list of which will be distributed at the commencement of the course. Students will be encouraged to join their Public Library in the event that books might have to be obtained on Library Interloan.
