Artemisia Gentileschi to Berthe Morisot: Three Centuries of Women Artists

Ref: C3744181

We shall study works created by women artists from the 17th to the 19th century in Europe. Lack of formal training affected their style and choice of subject matter but expanded access to academies and art training in the 19th century had an impact on their work . The ways in which they overcame limitations imposed on them by contemporary culture and society will be examined by focussing on artists such as Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, Berthe Morisot, Elizabeth Thompson Butler and Artemisia Gentileschi (to whom the National Gallery in London will dedicate a major exhibition in 2020).
