English Music: The Forgotten Generation

Ref: C3744179

Frank Bridge, Lord Berners, Gerald Finzi, Philip Heseltine (a.k.a Peter Warlock), John Ireland – names perhaps not forgotten, yet not as celebrated today as their many admirers feel they should be. Amid the rightly acclaimed works of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Britten and Tippett, the composers we shall encounter on this course often get lost somewhere in between. The aim is to try and redress that situation by exploring the lives and works of these brilliantly gifted and in some cases anarchic figures, each of whom made vital contributions to the richness of our musical culture.

Course aim

To explore the works of some relatively neglected English composers of the first half of the 20th century.
