Gods and Goddesses in Greek Art

Ref: C3744178

In this course we will look at the various ways in which ancient religion, beliefs and indeed daily life have been represented by classical artists. We will investigate the stories associated with Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Aphrodite and Hades along with great heroes such as Hercules, Achilles and the warriors in the Trojan war. This will be achieved through an exploration of classical Greek sculpture and vase painting, Roman sculpture and wall paintings from Pompeii and Herculaneum. We will also briefly touch on the influence of classical religion, art and poetry on the later art of the Renaissance and beyond. Classical monuments include the sculptures of the Parthenon, the frescoes from Pompeii and Greek painted vases, many of which can be found in the British Museum.
