Ealing Studios: Comedy with a Darker Side

Exploring the cinematic works produced by British film studio Ealing, renown for their comedies of the immediate post-war era. Explore the aspects of these films which allowed then to be enjoyed by so many whilst also looking deeper into their persistent undercurrent of darker social and political issues. With a focus on some classic comedies and some lesser known ventures into WW2 propaganda and even horror, just what darker issues were Ealing juggling with, how did they find a balance and why are we still talking about their films in the 21st Century?

Course aim

A stand-alone online lecture allowing attendees to explore the cinematic works produced by Ealing Studios, increasing their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the renown British film studio and film in general.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge, fresh appreciation & understanding for the films of Ealing Studios.
  • critically analyse, discuss and comment on films made by Ealing Studios.
  • draw from one's own knowledge and experience in expressing informed opinions when commenting on the films of Ealing Studios.
  • confidently discuss the subject area and in particular any aspects of an Ealing Studios film which one finds important

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A pen and note book would prove usefull.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre-reading/viewing is required - the session will take place/be hosted via the online platform Zoom. Upon enrolment participants will be sent a link to the session via email.
