We all know that meditation and mindfulness practice can benefit our wellbeing – yet how many of us have been able to commit to regular practice – have even told ourselves ‘I can’t meditate’? On this 6 week course you will have the opportunity to explore the practice and benefits of meditation and mindfulness in more depth. Each week, you will explore and practice different types of guided meditation (e.g. sound, colour, mindfulness, mantra) to enable you to consider your preference. It is hoped that, as a group, we will share our experiences and embed at least 15 minutes a day of meditation into our lives in between sessions. You will be encouraged to keep a journal and reflect on your progress (or lack of progress – there will be no judgements in this group).

Course aim

To connect with others in an exploration of Meditation and Mindfulness techniques as tools for health and wellbeing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience required - you will be encouraged to develop a meditation practice and supported through weekly meditations accessible via the tutor's You Tube videos.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the meanings of the terms meditation and mindfulness and identify the purpose/benefits of practice.
  • Identify different types of meditation (sound, colour, mantra, mindfulness etc)
  • Identify my preferred methods and ability to access different types of meditation
  • Reflect on my meditation practice and decide whether I wish to pursue further study.
  • Know how to access other resources if I wish to build on the 6 week course.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to reflect on your practice and share/discuss your experiences within the group but there is no obligation to do so if you do not feel comfortable sharing.

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • All materials will be provided
  • Ideally it would be useful to access the internet between sessions (if you find it encouraging to have access to spoken meditations during your practice).

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • If you enjoy the practice and wish to continue to build upon the foundation this course offers then there will be opportunities to do so.

  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
