Painting Practice

Designed for those with painting and drawing experience, this course is for those wishing to develop their confidence towards self directed practice. The term will be project based and students will have the opportunity to focus on pieces using their own choice of subject matter, alongside a series of colour mixing workshops with emphasis on colour palettes for landscapes and portraits. There will also be opportunity for students to learn about how to talk about their work in relation to showing and sharing through exhibitions, stalls and social media.

Course aim

This course is designed for self directed students with experience of painting and drawing practice wishing to gain more confidence with their art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Feel confident about my painting practice and the development of my artistic style
  • Demonstrate knowledge of colour mixing in relation to my own work
  • Engage in discussion with others about my artistic practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Students will have the opportunity to regularly discuss their development with their tutor, including an end of term tutorial

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Please provide your own painting supports i.e. canvas, board etc.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
