Brian Holmshaw is leading a series of short walks for the WEA called A History of Sheffield Parks and Woodlands. It will suit beginners and people building on existing knowledge. The five sessions will each investigate a different park or wood in the city through site visit. Thursday mornings, 10.30am-12.30pm for 8 weeks from 14 May to 9 July 2020 with the first session being held at Abbeyfield Park House, Abbeyfield Park, 187 Burngreave Rd, Sheffield S3 9DL. Course aim

To provide an understanding of how Sheffield's parks, woodlands and open spaces developed in the way we know them now.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand key aspects of the historical development of parks, woodlands and open spaces in the city
  • Understand how individual parks, woodlands and open spaces have developed due to specific historical, geographical, social, political and environmental factors in the city
  • Identify some key historical features and buildings in the Sheffield landscape

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • You may wish to bring a notebook to write down information or draw features you see on site visit. A camera may also be useful to record buildings and landscape features.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Handouts will be supplied.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
