This term's 6-week short course is intended as an intensive listening and conversation course, using some of the techniques usually employed, such as dictation and numbers, but with more emphasis than usual on unprepared listening and various forms of conversation, from guided, through pre-prepared, to off-the-cuff.

Course aim

6-week short course, supplementary to the usual lower advanced level course, but oncentrating on listening and conversation skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Post GCSE (or reasonably current GCSE) knowledge or recent use of spoken French at an equivalent level.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand spokenFrench t a higher level than before
  • understand how to build my listening skills, using various techniques
  • feel more confident in speaking in different circumstances
  • use improved grammar and pronunciation in my spoken language
  • show ncreased skills using and recognising numbers in various contexts

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • We subscribe to a magazine, Rendez-vous (Concorde publications). The tutor will tell you which issue is being studied this term.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Lower Advanced French is a long-running progressive course, and students joining will have the opportunity to stay with the group if they so wish. This term is a little different, in that it is a short intensive curse designed to improve listening techniques and speaking skills.
