Expect to work at a fast pace and to challenge yourself to explore new forms and formats. You will engage critically with your own work and with that of your peers. Homework is set each week and, in order to get the most out of the course, you should complete this.

Course aim

This course is for writers with some experience who have previously attended courses and workshops and are prepared to work at a robust pace. We'll cover poetry, fiction and autobiography.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for writers who have some previous experience of courses/ workshops.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create epistolary stories and poems.
  • Explore and enjoy aspects of creative non-fiction and create my own work in this genre.
  • Write an aubade (celebrating the dawn or early morning).
  • Examine a piece of writing and give constructive feedback.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework is set each week and ideally you should allow sufficient time to complete it and also to re-draft at least once before bringing to class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Sharing work is encouraged in a weekly read around and you can expect to give and receive constructive feedback.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring pen and paper to class. Tablets/laptops can be used but are not essential. Some activities in class may include looking up websites/information on the internet so, if you have a suitable device, please bring it. Sharing/borrowing is possible and help in using devices will be available.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Handouts are provided. Tutor may suggest texts/websites for further reading during the course.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • You could progress to Higher Education courses. Follow link to the PEARL website for information
  • Students on previous courses have contributed to anthologies, gone on to Further and Higher Education, taken part in open mic sessions and performances, submitted work for publication and competitions.
