Refresh your previous knowledge of Spanish to use when ordering drinks, snacks, eating at a restaurant, buying food and essentials; develop your vocabulary to ask for information about places and how to get there, to talk about places you have visited / things you have done. Become familiar with key phrases to use when dealing with difficulties, whilst improving your pronunciation , confidence and knowledge of the Spanish culture, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Course aim

To refresh previous knowledge of basic phrases for holidays, develop the students' skills and confidence and introduce them to more sentence structures whilst enhancing their knowledge of the culture of the Spanish speaking world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course will benefit any person who has attended a previous course(s) or has learned some key vocabulary and phrases of the topics included, being on holidays , and want to consolidate and expand their knowledge, and build up their confidence when speaking.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the names of various drinks and snacks, order them and understand prices.
  • Read and understand a menu in a restaurant, order a meal and ask questions about a particular dish.
  • Use key vocabulary and phrases to visit a market or some shops and buy different items of food and other essential products.
  • Ask where the main tourist attractions and other places are, and understand intructions to get to your destination (including using public transport)
  • Use key expressions when having to deal with some difficulties and get some help.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • The tutor wil provide you with a list of resources for the course. Students need to bring a notebook and pen/pencil and a dictionary. Be able to use the internet will be very useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Revision of basic phrases for food and drink, and to say Me gusta (I like) + the name of the different food; recap of the names of main public buildings and how to ask Where is it? to find your way around will be helpful. Your tutor will give you a list of resources.
