Poetry for Wellbeing

Poetry is a powerful way to connect with emotions and can help to refresh and restore balance. This is a creative workshop where we will read a variety of published poems to inspire new writing. All welcome - no experience necessary.

Course aim

This is a four week course where we will look at how poetry can help with our wellbeing. There will be writing exercises to produce new poems, as well as shared reading of published poems on the theme.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • All welcome - no experience necessary.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write at least one new poem on the subject of well being
  • Read and appreciate a variety of published poems relating to well being
  • Know how to access poems in literature and on the internet to improve well being
  • Develop confidence in reading and understanding poetry
  • Feel more able to express thoughts and ideas in poems

How will I be taught?

  • There will be writing exercises to help you to produce new poems. We will share our thoughts on published poems. There will be the opportunity to read and share our writing.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring a notebook or writing paper and a pen or pencil.

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
