On this course you will gain knowledge and understanding of life in Britain today. This will include learning about British customs and values, British history, laws and about the different countries that make up the United Kingdom. The course is 10 weeks long and it is desirable that learners have got at least Entry 2 level ESOL in order that they can understand the content and be able to participate by speaking and listening and also reading and writing. The course is held at a women only centre.

Course aim

On this course students will learn about British values and customs, gain knowledge of British history and culture and understand the different countries that make up the UK.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • know about the National Health Service in the UK.
  • have understanding of the legal system of England and Wales.
  • be aware of British institutions such as the police and fire service.
  • be familiar with the Parliamentary system of the UK.
  • have knowledge of the English educational system.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • please bring paper and pens
