This course is designed to help you develop further your basic listening, understanding and speaking skills in Greek. It will also help you improve your basic reading and writing skills so that you can identify and pronounce more confidently words and phrases in Greek, e.g. street and place names. You will also gain an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, you will be introduced to some simple everyday language and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise key words and phrases in a fun and enjoyable way through a variety of activities (including pictures, games and roleplays). Topics include making enquiries about facilities and meals in a hotel, dealing with problems with accommodation, and checking the details of a proposed journey before taking a taxi. Handouts will be given out to help you revise at home what you learn in class.

Course aim

To expand your previous knowledge of Greek with some more simple everyday language you need for a visit to Greece / Cyprus and to give you an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Some prior knowledge of Greek is required. If you are not sure if this is the right level course for you please ring WEA on 0300 303 3464 and ask to speak to the tutor.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Book a room in a hotel and check what facilities are available.
  • Enquire about availability and times of meals, and where the meals are served.
  • Deal with problems arising when staying in a hotel or other type of accommodation.
  • Give a taxi driver the details of a place you would like to travel to and enquire about the distance, duration and fare of the journey.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will regularly receive informal feedback at various points during the course to help you progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen or pencil and notepad and a ring-binder of folder to keep your work in.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
