Introduction to Permaculture

Want to live more sustainably? Gain a greater understanding of the permaculture design system by discovering how to apply the ethics and principles in your lives. Parts of the course will be held outdoors at a local Community allotment where you will see examples of permaculture designs in a practical setting. On the second day you will create your own permaculture design, and then record this on paper and share it with other students. This design system is not only applicable to gardens, it can be applied in all systems ie: businesses, homes, lifestyles etc. This course is varied, informative and fun so come along and be" Permacultured"!

Course aim

This course will introduce to students the Ethics and Principles of permaculture design and will demonstrate how to live in harmony with nature by applying Permaculture to our everyday lives.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and describe the importance of the 3 Ethics of Permaculture
  • Be familiar with the principles and give examples of at least 3 of the 12 principles
  • Demonstrate the ability to create a simple Permaculture design design for a designated area (Group activity)
  • Commit this design to paper and share it with the group.
  • Share your design process with the group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be visits to a local community allotment where some studies will take place

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you could bring a pen and notebook. Please bring a packed lunch if possible.( Shops and food outlets are 10 minutes away) Please wear suitable outdoor clothes and footwear

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
