Ref: C3677335

The course will help to develop the necessary skills to build a stringed musical instrument, with an emphasis on the violin family.

Course aim

To provide instruction and guidance for the building of stringed musical instruments. This includes information on design, acoustic properties and visual aesthetics as well as development of woodworking skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • appreciate the design of stringed musical instruments
  • have improved woodworking and tool handling skills
  • use tools and machinery in a safe and effective way

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Although it's not compulsory to carry our work outside the class, you will make much faster progress if you can do so.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will receive continuous feedback on your progress from the tutor. You are encouraged to use a notebook for record keeping.

What else do I need to know?

  • We have a good selection of specialised tools, but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them. Materials are not included in the course fee, but the tutor can advise on obtaining them.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • "The Art of Violin Making" by Courtnall and Johnson is an excellent book which is strongly recommended. There are also some valuable internet resources, but the tutor should be consulted about their relative merits.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
